Text 3 May Pilipino Cultural Night 2010: COMPLEX

The Pilipino American Collegiate Endeavor presents our 38th Annual Pilipino Cultural Night, “COMPLEX”. The longest running PCN in history, a night full of dancing, music, acting, singing, and everything in between.

COMPLEX is such a fitting name, considering that this show touches on things that we worry about on a daily basis, while simultaneously addressing things that are too taboo to mention on that same day-to-day basis. This show is not just for Filipinos and Filipino Americans, but for all people who are.. human. I was born and raised in the diverse city of San Francisco, so although being Chinese American in a Filipino American organization can be controversial to some people, it does not bring up any second thoughts for myself; COMPLEX consists of a very, very diverse cast that comes together in the Fil-Am community to put on this amazing show, and it touches me to know that this is the truest form of diversity, where we can come together for one cause. Unity crosses all color lines. I interned last semester and found that aside from the issues and struggles we face, everything ultimately becomes a part of our own lives. And that the things we create are birthed from our knowledge and passions. The story and stories within COMPLEX are bits and pieces of our lives, our experiences, and things we WANT to see brought to life. We are a complex people, complex humans with complex lives with complex emotions who may happen to live in complexes! The Filipino community is full of incredible artists who have spectacular ideas and it has been a privilege to be blessed with such colorful visions and amazing people in my life.

This is my first PCN, and it has been everything to me; stress, tears, laughs and everything in between. But through all the late nights and re-edits and re-uploads and removing and adding lines, it has made me a better writer, leader, and visionary. The part that was most gratifying and moving was watching the script come to life with our amazing actors and it was well worth every single minute. Thank You Ryan Roa and Coreageous for spotting out my capabilities as a writer and trusting my creativity to draw out such a beautiful product; Nella Parucha for your guidance, wisdom, help, and laughs as my writer-half; Our beloved acting cast for bringing the characters to life. I am grateful and honored to be a part of such a beautiful legacy. This is truly an experience unlike any other, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I will definitely be back next year.
